George Schenck, a television writer and producer who served as showrunner on the hit CBS police procedural "NCIS," has died. He was 82.

Schenck died peacefully at his home in Brentwood, California, on Monday, according to his family.

Schenck had a long and successful career in television, writing and producing for a variety of shows, including "The Waltons," "Magnum, P.I.," and "JAG." He joined "NCIS" in 2003 as a writer and producer, and was promoted to showrunner in 2006.

Under Schenck's leadership, "NCIS" became one of the most popular shows on television, averaging over 20 million viewers per episode. The show is currently in its 19th season, making it one of the longest-running primetime dramas in history.

Schenck stepped down as showrunner of "NCIS" in 2016, but continued to work on the show as an executive producer. He also developed and executive produced several spin-offs of "NCIS," including "NCIS: Los Angeles" and "NCIS: New Orleans."

Schenck is survived by his wife, three children, and five grandchildren.
