Dansby Swanson’s 2 homers power Cubs past Mets 5-2

Dansby Swanson hit a pair of home runs and drove in three as the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 5-2 on Monday night. Patrick Wisdom also homered for the Cubs, who have won four of their last five.

Swanson put the Cubs on the board with a solo shot off Mets starter Chris Bassitt in the second inning. He added a two-run homer off reliever Joely Rodriguez in the fourth to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead.

Wisdom made it 4-0 with a solo homer off Rodriguez in the fifth. The Mets got on the board in the sixth on an RBI double by Eduardo Escobar, but Swanson answered back with his second homer of the game in the seventh to make it 5-1.

The Mets added a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Nimmo, but it wasn’t enough. Scott Effross worked the ninth for his first save with the Cubs.

Justin Verlander throws 2nd career no-hitter, Astros blank Blue Jays

Justin Verlander threw the second no-hitter of his career and the Astros blanked the Blue Jays 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Verlander was dominant from the start, striking out the side in the first inning. He retired the first 18 batters he faced before Bo Bichette reached on an error by shortstop Jeremy Pena to start the seventh inning.

Verlander got the next two batters to ground out and then struck out Matt Chapman to end the inning. He finished the game with 12 strikeouts and no walks. It was the third no-hitter in Astros history.

Brewers’ Corbin Burnes no-hits Guardians for 2nd time this season

Corbin Burnes no-hit the Guardians for the second time this season on Wednesday night, leading the Brewers to a 7-0 victory.

Burnes was even more dominant than he was in his first no-hitter against the Guardians on April 25. He struck out 15 batters and walked none in his seven innings of work.

The Brewers gave Burnes all the support he needed with a four-run first inning. Rowdy Tellez hit a two-run homer off Guardians starter Triston McKenzie, and Willy Adames added a two-run single.

The Brewers added three more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Hunter Renfroe and an RBI single by Luis Urias.
